IVF automation company Overture Life raised $20.6 million led by Overwater Ventures, CEO Hans Gangeskar tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: The company aims to bring consistency and efficiency to the laborious and expensive IVF process.

The big picture: IVF is under growing scrutiny amid surging demand fueled by President Trump's recent executive order on fertility access. 

Follow the money: GV (formerly known as Google Ventures) and Khosla Ventures​ joined the round, which brings total funding to $57 million.

It gives Overture roughly two years of runway, Gangeskar says. The company's burn rate is about $500,000 a month, he adds.

Funds will support expansion of Overture's U.S. operations, clinical research, and commercialization of its "DaVitri" platform in partnership with fertility clinics.

How it works: Overture's DaVitri system automates egg freezing and embryo warming with robotics and microfluidics.

It aims ultimately to reduce the number of cycles needed to achieve pregnancy — one of IVF's most expensive and emotionally draining pain points.

What they're saying: "We need new thinking. We need better access. We need more data. We need more transparency across the board," says Gangeskar, citing the opacity of the IVF process.

"Egg freezing could and should be a bigger market to create more economic freedom [so people are] not tied to a biological clock," says Overwater Ventures managing partner Kristina Simmons.

Friction point: Before joining Overture, Gangeskar was the CEO of women's telehealth company Nurx, a role he stepped down from in 2019. That same year, the New York Times reported allegations that the company was storing birth control pills in closets. 

"Nurx's safety record on patients speaks for itself," Gangeskar says.

"We ran an extensive diligence process to bring someone on board that could launch a complex technology and navigate hard regulatory environments, and Hans met that bar," Simmons says.

The latest: Overture is still running clinical trials, but it plans to publish the results in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
