Medeloop, a General Catalyst-backed life science research startup, raised a $15 million Series A to help accelerate medical research, CEO Rene Caissie tells Axios exclusively.

The round also included insiders GC and Maven Ventures, alongside new investors Healthier Capital, Up2 Opportunity Fund and CFO Advisors.

How it works: The Menlo Park, Calif., company's software is designed to streamline applying for grants, accessing relevant funding, collecting clinical trial data, and writing a final paper for peer review.

It is focused on helping early stage clinical research and pre-drug and molecule discovery.

Medeloop uses AI to comb through data sources like electronic medical records, wearables and CDC data, focusing on early-stage clinical research.  

The AI agents not only speeds up research but also democratizes it, empowering individual researchers and smaller institutions to compete with well-funded, large-scale operations. 

Its clinical trial platform has a mobile app for participants and a web app for researchers. Its software suite also has a no-code analytics platform for data analysis and a manuscript publication platform. 

The end-to-end medical research platform sells to academic medical colleges, smaller universities and biotech companies. 

What's next:  "This round has secured at least 36 months of runway, so there is no pressure of fundraising soon — but it depends on the growth trajectory," Caissie says. 

By the numbers: There are over 7000 rare diseases without a cure or treatment.

In 2022, U.S. health care spending grew 4.1 percent to reaching $4.5 trillion or $13,493 per person.  

That is 17.3% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product.

 "These 7000 diseases here are costing our healthcare systems a massive amount of money and if we had ways to treat them, it would reduce cost." 

"It used to take a PhD student five years to find a molecular structure of a protein and now with the advent of the arrival of alpha fold, it found all 250,000 proteins in a short time span," he says.
