CardiaTec, a biotech startup focused on cardiovascular disease, raised $6.5 million in seed funding, CEO Raphael Peralta tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, yet treatment innovation lags other diseases.

How it works: Traditional research is done by blood, but Cardiatec uses multi-omics human data derived from heart tissue.

The company aims to build the first and largest proprietary human multi-omics dataset.

Multi-omics research approach that uses data from genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and proteomics, which provides a more complete understanding of complex disease biology, Peralta says.

"This novel data and unique insights drive a personalized therapeutic and more tailored to each individual," he says.

Zoom in: The round was led by Montage Ventures and included new investor Continuum Health Ventures along with existing investors Laidlaw Scholars Ventures and Apex Ventures.

Individual investors include Dr. Maximilien Levesque, CEO of Aqemia and Naheed Kurji, former president of recursion pharmaceuticals Canada and CEO of Cyclica.

Prior to this round, which gives the company 2.5 years of runway, the Cambridge, England company raised roughly $2 million.

CardiaTec is a spin-out from the Han Lab at the University of Cambridge and works with over 65 hospitals across the US and the UK.
