Health care tech startup Eden raised a $10 million Series A to improve radiology globally, CEO Julián Ríos tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: Global demand for radiology continues to outpace its workforce.

Zoom in: The round was led by Sierra Ventures with participation from Kaszek, Alt Capital, Y Combinator and Khosla Ventures.

How it works: The Mexico City startup uses LLMs to help radiologists process vast amounts of medical data, allowing for faster diagnoses.

Its cloud-based system enables radiologists to connect to the platform and verify diagnoses remotely,

Eden currently processes over 6 million studies annually, serving over 1,500 institutions across 17 countries.

It is focused on Latin American growth before expanding elsewhere.

By the numbers: Eden is used by 75% of radiologists in Mexico.

The company has raised over $25 million in capital to-date.

It has enhanced diagnostics for 6 million patients annually.

What's next: "If startups would prioritize profitability always, then they will be SMEs, not startups," he says.

"We prioritize profitability and have strong unit economics on everything that goes with delivering the product."

 "We want to change the whole world, and that requires capital.  We want to keep growing while keeping to fundamentals financially."

"We are optimizing for the next five years and when you have a good product, you can have both growth and profitability."

State of play: Venture dollars continue flowing to startups that leverage artificial intelligence to catch diseases earlier.

Elucid, which provides AI-based imaging software for heart disease, raised $80 million in Series C funding.

Cleerly, a developer of a software overlay that adds AI to coronary CT scans, last July circulated $192 million in Series C financing.

Eko Health, a developer of technology to detect heart and lung disease remotely, raised a $41 million Series D

AliveCor, a developer of FDA-cleared personal electrocardiogram devices, raised a Series F in 2022.

Cleerly, a developer of a software overlay that adds AI to coronary CT scans, in 2022 collected a $192 million Series C.
