Roughly 2 in 3 voters oppose cutting medical research funding, according to a new poll from Republican-aligned Public Opinion Strategies provided first to Axios.
Why it matters: The findings are being shared with Hill offices as appropriators debate FY26 funding levels for NIH and other health agencies and the Trump administration is pressing for deep cuts.
By the numbers: 65% of those surveyed oppose the proposed almost $20 billion cut to the federal medical research budget contained in Trump's NIH budget request, according to the poll.
- 62% of voters said they would be less likely to vote for a member of Congress who voted for medical research cuts.
- The firm surveyed 1,000 registered voters from June 19–24.
The intrigue: The poll was conducted for a new campaign, United for Cures.
