House Republicans' reconciliation bill will reduce the number of people with health insurance by 8.6 million in 2034 and save $715 billion from the health provisions over that time period, according to the CBO.
Why it matters: Those are significant coverage losses that could provoke a political backlash and give some moderate members pause, as well as major savings for the Treasury.
Between the lines: The estimates are preliminary and were provided by the nonpartisan scorekeeper to Democrats, who requested them.
- There is not yet a detailed breakdown of the effects of each Medicaid provision.
- The coverage losses stem both from Medicaid changes and from the ACA markets, where the bill seeks to codify changes proposed by the Trump administration, such as limiting special enrollment periods.
