President Trump signed an executive order Monday night stating the United States intends to withdraw from the World Health Organization.
Why it matters: The move could have major implications for global health efforts, since the United States is a major funder of the WHO, with contributions ranging from $163 million and $816 million annually over the last decade, per KFF.
Public health experts have largely opposed the United States pulling out.
Driving the news: Trump has bashed the WHO, arguing it mishandled the outbreak of COVID-19 in China and hadn't demonstrated independence from the Chinese Communist Party.
The order on Monday also cites "onerous payments from the United States, far out of proportion with other countries' assessed payments."
What's next: There is a year-long process to withdraw from the WHO.
Trump provided notice in 2020, but the withdrawal process was reversed when President Biden took office in January 2021.
