Plaid, the startup plumbing much of the fintech economy, has no IPO plans for 2024, CEO Zach Perret told Lucinda onstage at Fintech Meetup yesterday.

Why it matters: This is the second closely watched IPO candidate to take its name off the 2024 speculation list, Lucinda writes.

Context: Founded in 2013, Plaid set the rumor mill abuzz last year when it hired former Expedia CFO Eric Hart as CFO. It added former Cloudflare CPO Jen Taylor as president last month.

What they're saying: "We have no immediate plans to IPO," Perret said, adding that "immediate" means in 2024.

"We've been fortunate to hire some truly amazing executives. And a lot of people said: Are you hiring a CFO because you want to go public? My response was we've never had a CFO," he said, noting the company now has over 1,000 employees.

State of play: Stripe, another heavily watched late-stage fintech, struck its name off the list last week when it said current and former employees could cash out in a $1 billion-plus employee tender offer.

The big picture: This all comes as Plaid has begun to leverage its network of banks and fintechs to expand beyond connecting financial data from one app to another.

Some of those developments have started to mirror the infamous "Plaid volcano" — a drawing made by a Visa executive showing what the fintech company could become, and why it could be a threat to the payments giant, per a DOJ lawsuit against Visa.

That image, which surfaced in 2020, suggested that Plaid could offer fraud tools and reporting and alternative payment rails.

Last year, Plaid launched an anti-fraud network and began offering pay-by-bank in partnership with Adyen — a service that would enable businesses to accept payments directly from banks and bypass card transaction fees.

"It said a lot of things that we could be doing," Perret said of the volcano. 

Though he noted: " The majority of our focus this year is going to be on navigating the open banking transition ... as we have to convert a lot of the connections that we have."

Background: The CFPB has been working on open banking rules that would govern how consumers share their financial data with different institutions — with expectations that a final rule may come later this year.

Banking as a Service provider Synctera raised an $18.6 million Series A extension led by existing backers Lightspeed and Fin Capital, the company tells Ryan exclusively.

Why it's the BFD: The funding news comes amid broader turmoil in the Banking as a Service sector.

Context: This is actually the second extension Synctera has raised since announcing its $33 million Series A round in June 2021.

The previous extension — a $15 million round led by National Bank of Canada's venture arm NAventures — was announced last March.

Following the completion of that last extension, the company expanded north and had its first Canadian customer launch in December.

Zoom in: The new funding includes participation from previous backers NAventures and Diagram, as well as new investors Banco Popular and Mana Ventures.

Along with the financing, the company announced it has hired Leigh Gross, formerly an executive at fintechs Array and Summer, as chief revenue officer.

Between the lines: Synctera again plans to use the new funds to expand its capabilities internationally, recently signing LatAm investment bank BTG Pactual as a customer.

Through that partnership, BTG Pactual will be able to offer U.S.-based bank accounts to its international wealth management clients.

Synctera also has struck a deal with African payments startup Flutterwave to broaden its capabilities in the U.S.

What they're saying: "What's happening right now is a game of who's going to survive the bad sentiment curve and get back on the other side," Synctera CEO Peter Hazlehurst says.

Hazlehurst adds that Synctera has significantly raised the bar for potential customers to qualify for partnership with the company.

"At the start, we were onboarding folks with half a million to a million dollars of fundraising," he says. "Now the minimum bar is $5 million, which is obviously significantly different."

The bottom line: As it seeks to partner with more international firms that want to offer U.S.-based services, compliance is key to making those programs work.

"You can't cut any corners, and the onboarding flows — whether they're in the U.S. or Brazil or Mexico or wherever — have to be consistent and meet the minimum bar of the United States' regulatory regime," Hazlehurst says.

2. The BFD: Synctera eyes international expansion

While Synctera is announcing new financing and partnerships, other players in the BaaS market are struggling.

Synapse laid off staff last fall, was sued by one of its largest clients, Mercury, and was kicked off banking partner Evolve Bank.

Solid (also an Evolve partner) was also sued in the fall by its Series B investor FTV Capital, which claims the company's founders lied about their revenue numbers and customer churn.

Blue Ridge Bank, Choice Bank and Lineage Bank have all been hit with consent orders or enforcement actions related to their BaaS programs.

Treasury Prime laid off staff last month as it pivots away from selling to fintechs and focusing instead on solely offering its middleware to banks who would directly manage their own fintech partnerships.

3. State of play: Banking as a Service turmoil

MoeGo, a payments and scheduling software company for pet groomers, raised $24 million in Series A funding led by Base10 Partners, the company tells Lucinda exclusively.

Why it matters: Investors have been betting on the growing number of pets in the country — and on the increasingly human-like treatment of said furry companions.

How it works: MoeGo is among the growing class of software and payments companies that believe they can capture a loyal customer base by focusing on  a specific industry — for example, Toast launching with a focus on restaurants.

In addition to scheduling and payments, MoeGo enables groomers to customize how many of a specific breed they will groom and to set up complex rules for commissions.

"Large breeds need a lot of care. ... It's very exhausting. So a lot of groomers actually prefer a limited number of slots for large-breed dogs or prefer to groom them in the morning," says CEO Ethan Dong.

The software also allows shops to identify which groomers are working on what kind of dog, making it easier to automatically calculate commissions and set up payroll.

MoeGo introduced its payments service roughly a year ago and says it now accounts for about 20% of its revenue.

Most of the company's revenue comes from subscriptions.

Previously focused on smaller groomers, MoeGo has since been adding larger businesses with 100 or more locations.

Context: Venture dollars invested in pet tech has held up surprisingly well after the pandemic drop off, growing 15% last year to $1.1 billion while global venture funding fell 35% in the same period, data from PitchBook shows.

Spending on pets grew 78% from 2013 to 2021, outpacing the 39.2% growth in total expenditure, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows.

But pet e-commerce company Chewy.com in August warned of consumers becoming more "value conscious" and trading up wet food for generally cheaper dry food.

Other investors in the deal included Mars Petcare's Digitalis Ventures, Conductive Ventures and Uphonest Capital.

4. $24M in pet money

🧾 Leaked Treasury Prime docs show risks of BaaS business (Fintech Business Weekly)

According to internal documents, Treasury Prime ended 2023 with 54 fintechs active on its platform and 24 booked but not yet live. The company ended 2023 with $17.4 million in ARR, representing about 55% growth over the December prior.

Treasury Prime clients hold an aggregate of about $1.5 billion in deposits, as of the end of last year. But the combined share of AngelList and Meow, its two largest clients, constitute over 80% of those deposits.

The account's previous balance limit was $250,000, the maximum amount the FDIC would cover in the event Goldman Sachs were to become insolvent. Any deposits above $250,000, up to the new $1 million limit, would not be covered by the FDIC in the event of bank failure.

The financial product seller said Saturday that a fraudulent filing had been submitted in its name. The company is now investigating the filing.
