Advocate Technologies, which helps commercial insurance professionals compare policy prices and coverage, has raised $18 million in seed funding, CEO Ashwin Agarwal tells Axios exclusively.
Why it matters: Commercial insurance policies are bespoke contracts that can be hard to compare across properties, carriers and brokers.
Zoom in: Vestigo Ventures, Brewer Lane and MetaProp invested, alongside select family offices.
How it works: Advocate reads insurance policies, converts them into standardized data, and compares their prices, coverage and compliance across similar risks.
- Historically, customers employed Advocate's 50-plus person team for policy servicing and coverage reviews and paid based on outcomes.
What's next: The company is launching a self-service, per-seat product called Market Terminal.
- Advocate will open Market Terminal to brokers, lenders, risk managers and property owners through a self-service sign-up.
- It also plans to publish weekly market data through its Advocate Insurance Desk.
The big picture: A commercial insurance policy can stretch to 200 pages, with different limits, exclusions and risk factors that make a simple price comparison misleading.
- The company says it can complete a complex assessment in roughly five minutes, instead of a day of manual work.
Yes, but: Advocate does not treat the process as fully automated. Its software combines AI with deterministic logic, while humans review edge cases.
Catch up quick: Advocate began in 2020 by doing insurance operations work for loan servicers and brokers.
- It focuses on complex commercial risks, rather than personal auto or homeowner's insurance.
- The company remained in stealth until it had enough policy data and coverage knowledge to make useful comparisons for commercial clients, Agarwal says.
