Aleph, which helps finance teams automate planning and analysis, raised a $29 million Series B round, CEO Albert Gozzi tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: Finance teams are under pressure both to close faster and explain variances that span scattered systems.

The new round brings Aleph's total funding to $46 million.

How it works: Aleph plugs into finance teams' spreadsheets to manage planning, piping in live data from dozens of systems, and layers in explainable AI to cut reporting cycles.

It offers add-ins for Excel and Google Sheets that also extend to PowerPoint, Google Slides, Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Its AI workflow compares actuals against budgets or forecasts in minutes, with an audit trail to make outputs verifiable.

Context: Gozzi positions New York-based Aleph against legacy financial planning and analysis (FP&A) suites, which he says take months to implement, and newer challengers that try to replace spreadsheets outright.

According to a recent study, 96% of FP&A professionals use spreadsheets for planning, and 93% use them for reporting purposes on a daily or weekly basis.

"Spreadsheets are not going away in the next 10 years," Gozzi says. "Joining them rather than fighting them has always been one of our guiding principles."

Between the lines: Implementation time is the key differentiator, Gozzi says.

Smaller finance teams can be up and running in a single day, while larger organizations usually can operate within two weeks, he says.

Typical deployments plug into five to seven systems on average, across ERP, HR, CRM and data warehouses.

Gozzi says Aleph generally does not charge for implementation. 

By the numbers: The company says it has grown 10x since its October 2023 Series A and wins about 80% of competitive deals.

Customers include Notion, Zapier, Turo and Harvey.

What's next: Aleph plans to deepen its data platform and expand beyond variance analysis into additional AI-driven workflows.
