Crypto-focused asset manager Grayscale says it's confidentially filed for an IPO.

Why it matters: Bitcoin is reaching major highs, trading above $122,000 on Monday and more than doubling from a year earlier.

Zoom in: Grayscale has yet to determine how many shares to register and the price range.

Zoom out: The announcement coincides with "crypto week" in Washington, where Congress is on the verge of remaking American finance to embrace the currency.

Lucinda's thought bubble: Grayscale is considered the crown jewel of Barry Silbert's Digital Currency Group empire, being one of the first avenues for Main Street investors to access bitcoin.

In the first quarter of 2024, it accounted for $156 million of DCG's $229 million in revenue.

There have long been titters that Grayscale was ripe for a spinoff of some sort, especially after the bankruptcy of DCG's Genesis lending unit in 2023 sparked concerns of a contagion to other parts of the empire. DCG has since been distancing itself from Grayscale.

Between the lines: Testing the IPO waters now is no surprise — stablecoin startup Circle's debut earlier this year exceeded all expectations, proving investors want more crypto.

Moreover, Grayscale is perhaps the most easily understandable part of DCG, both from an investor and regulatory point of view.

The big question will be if its business model will be more than a wrapper for bitcoin's ups and downs.
