Legal-tech startups courted their second-highest quarterly intake of venture cash on record.

The big picture: Dealmaking remained busy even with AI uncertainty.

By the numbers: Q1 saw more than $1.4 billion flow to legal-tech firms across 75 deals, per PitchBook.

Yes, but: It's still a dip from 2025's fourth quarter, the highest on record at $2.6 billion.

2026's Q1 deal count is also the lowest since Q4 2023, showing the skyrocketing valuations in the sector.

Between the lines: The checks are generally bigger as front-runners start to emerge.

Case in point: Harvey, a San Francisco-based legal AI startup, raised $200 million at an $11 billion valuation led by GIC and Sequoia Capital last week.

State of play: Shares of public legal-tech companies such as Thompson Reuters, Wolters Kluwer and Relx are all down massively.

Investors say they are backing AI-native legal solutions that have deeper workflow integration and proprietary jurisdiction-specific data pipelines — something very different than legacy solutions.

"Venture investors aren't anchoring to public market comps," says Evan Wijaya, a principal and founding member at Touring Capital. "They are underwriting the view that AI companies are a fundamentally different asset class."

Zoom in: Litigation-specific AI, compliance automation, and "AI-native law firms" that actually deliver legal services rather than selling to law firms, are drawing the most interest, says Matt Miller, managing partner at Left Lane Capital.

What they're saying: "I'd expect Q2 and Q3 to stay strong, probably $1 billion to $1.5 billion per quarter," Miller says. 

"The IPO narrative is building with Clio [valued at] $5 billion and Harvey at $11 billion, and if one of them actually files, it could blow the doors open for the whole category."

What we're hearing: Some of the large rounds being raised are to build M&A war chests, as companies like Harvey and Legora are consolidating, not just growing organically.
