Adaptive Security has raised an $81 million Series B led by Bain Capital Ventures, co-founder and CEO Brian Long tells Axios Pro.

Why it matters: Cyberattacks that manipulate people into giving up a company's confidential information have spread like wildfire, thanks to AI.

Known as social engineering attacks, more than 98% of them use AI. 

How it works: Adaptive assesses what types of social engineering attacks a company may be susceptible to and simulates deepfake and impersonation scenarios across voice calls, text messages, video and email.

The company also provides feedback on how employees handled the simulated attacks and offers more than 700 resources and trainings to combat future incidents.

Zoom in: NVentures, OpenAI Startup Fund, a16z, Abstract Ventures, Capital One Ventures and Citi Ventures joined the round.

By the numbers: The company has more than 500 enterprise customers, including PayPal, Xerox and the National Hockey League.

Adaptive, founded in 2023, has raised $146.5 million to date.

Catch up quick: Adaptive raised a $43 million Series A led by OpenAI Startup Fund and a16z in April.

The OpenAI Startup Fund led an additional $12 million follow-on investment in September.

What they're saying: "People aren't prepared for how quickly these attacks are happening," Long says.

What's next: "I don't know the timing for a Series C," Long says. "However, I wouldn't say it's not something we wouldn't consider sometime next year."
