Vast Data, founded back in 2016, has been busy trying to position itself as an operating system for large enterprises' AI data.

The big picture: Pre-ChatGPT era companies like Vast have capitalized on the recent agentic obsession.

Driving the news: Vast signed a nearly $1.2 billion commercial agreement with CoreWeave on Thursday, extending an existing partnership, where the cloud provider will use Vast as the primary data platform for its cloud ‌infrastructure.

How it works: While Vast got its start in data storage, it added database and compute layers to create a scalable platform just as enterprises were starting to figure out their AI initiatives.

By the numbers: The company has been cash-flow positive for several years and has been growing "several hundreds of percent a year," co-founder and CMO Jeff Denworth tells Axios Pro.

While he declined to give ARR (although he says the company may release something soon), it has been reported that the company was at $200 million in ARR in January.

What we're watching: Denworth didn't elaborate on an earlier report that Vast was looking to raise a round at a $30 billion valuation, but did say the company is in constant contact with existing and new investors.

Denworth says the company does not need funding, but does use it as a way to market itself.

What's next: Vast is building toward an IPO, as evidenced by the addition of former Shopify CFO Amy Shapero as its first CFO last year.

"Every banker wants to take us out," Denworth says.
