Agentic AI that can execute and help solve specific business problems is providing compelling investment opportunities in the evolving AI landscape, Snowflake Ventures director Harsha Kapre tells Axios Pro.

Why it matters: Snowflake plays a large role in helping deploy AI agents,  and its venture arm has made several bets in the sector. 

Driving the news: Snowflake Ventures recently took part in Observe's massive $156 million Series C. The cloud observability startup uses AI agents to help companies troubleshoot applications.

In June, the venture arm also participated in a $25 million Series A extension for Sema4.ai, an AI agent building platform.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

The current buzzword in venture and the enterprise space is agentic AI. What are you looking at in the space?

"What I find the most interesting is the workflow component of what I would call agentic solutions. And so when I think about an agentic platform, it's the ability to not only understand what's happening through the data and being able to recommend some actions or derive some insights from that data, but it's the taking action."

Where are you seeing people put their money?

"If you look at a year ago, there was a lot of investment in the infrastructure side, right? If you fast forward, I think there's been a little bit of a shift more towards the application side of who's actually driving value out of these things. 

I think now the application side of the house is where I'm seeing a lot of the VCs putting a little bit more focus."

In general, what does Snowflake Ventures look for?

"We believe that the value we bring from a venture perspective is to unlock a 'better together' story.

The value we can bring that starts to form the basis for an investment thesis is, can we bring the customer channel to this company because we see the opportunity of what this can unlock with our existing customers and the partner is willing to lean in and build this on Snowflake."

Will Snowflake Ventures invest anywhere from early stage to later rounds?

"The idea behind our thesis is that we are looking to — and my overused analogy is — pour fuel on a fire. To do that, that means we have to see some reasonable traction or measurable traction with a company in order to then say, 'Hey, we think we can do something really big here.'"

If that happens at the seed stage, we can certainly invest at the seed stage. But typically, that happens at the Series A and later, when the company's a little bit more established."
