Reveal Technology, a mapping and imagery defense tech startup, raised a $30 million Series B led by Ballistic Ventures, CEO and founder Garrett Smith tells Axios Pro.

Why it matters: The startup is eyeing a Series C in the first half of next year. 

How it works: Reveal develops offline platforms to convert drone video into 3D maps on smartphones that include imagery and analytics.

The company also has a mobile biometrics system for human identity vetting.

The product roadmap includes expansion into electronic warfare.

Flashback: Smith founded the Bozeman, Montana-based company in late 2018 after experiencing a lack of operational mapping technology during combat service in Afghanistan in 2010.

Zoom in: Booz Allen Ventures, defy.vc, Shield Capital, Next Frontier Capital and Madison Valley Partners also participated in the new round.

Reveal has now raised more than $42 million, Smith says.

Zoom out: The U.S. military accounts for about 90% of Reveal's business, Smith says.

It also sells to other militaries, as well as public safety organizations in the U.S.

Smith says there could be business applications in the enterprise for some of its technology.

What they're saying: "There is a defense tech renaissance going on right now," Smith says. "I think when (the U.S.) is strong, it deters a lot of chaos in the world."
