Senate Majority Leader John Thune expects some "give and take" as Republicans figure out what to do with the IRA tax credits in reconciliation.
Why it matters: It's similar to Speaker Mike Johnson's comments in recent months about taking a "scalpel" to the climate law, suggesting that not everything from the IRA will be repealed.
Driving the news: Asked about IRA incentives for biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel, Thune acknowledged "differences of opinion" among Republicans about what to do with tax credits from the law.
- "As we work through reconciliation … there will be some give and take and, obviously, conversations around some of the energy policies and provisions that are in place today," he told reporters during the weekly GOP leadership news conference.
What we're watching: Sen. Kevin Cramer told reporters he's working with fellow North Dakotan Rep. Julie Fedorchak on "letter language" or "guidance" on where Republicans have opportunities to repeal or modify IRA credits.
- Fedorchak has a bill that would phase out the production and investment incentives for clean energy over five years.
- Cramer called that a "noble goal." But he predicted that Republicans will end up with "a nuanced approach that recognizes some … tech or fuel-neutral incentives."
