Conservative Climate Caucus leaders are pushing to save IRA tax credits from repeal in reconciliation.
Why it matters: The 81-member group has substantial muscle in the GOP as it debates priorities in a massive budget and tax bill.
What they're saying: Caucus Chair Mariannette Miller-Meeks on Thursday identified five tax credits that have benefitted her home state of Iowa:
- 45Q (carbon sequestration);
- 45Z (clean fuels production);
- 45X (critical minerals production); and
- the tech-neutral electricity production and investment tax credits.
Her message to other Republicans: "Please have a conversation with members about what's happening in their districts so that then you can craft legislation," she told reporters.
- IRA credits "are already driving transformative investment in American energy," Miller-Meeks said during a Ways and Means hearing the day earlier.
Yes, but: Miller-Meeks, along with Reps. Jen Kiggans and Buddy Carter, told reporters they weren't drawing any red lines to defend the credits.
- "Leadership and the speaker have made it clear: don't paint yourself in the corner,'" Carter said. "At this point, we're still at the stage of throwing mud against the wall to see what sticks."
- "Red lines is not how I think," Kiggans added.
- Instead, she said her aim is, "How can we ... shape this into the goal that we're trying to get to, which is clean energy?"
