The Trump White House is moving quickly to roll out a deregulatory agenda as part of an executive order to "unleash American energy."
Why it matters: The administration will end "Biden's policies of climate extremism," streamline permitting, and rescind "all regulations that impose undue burdens" on the energy industry, according to a White House press release issued during President Trump's inauguration speech.
Trump's executive actions will include:
Alaska fossil fuels: Trump wants to ramp up Alaskan oil and natural gas development and exports of LNG.
- "Alaska has such an incredible abundance of natural resources, but under the previous administration, both the Department of the Interior and USDA have limited Alaska's production and its ability to produce wealth for American citizens," said a Trump official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
- The order will note Alaska's location makes it a "crucial place from which we could export LNG, not only to other parts of the United States, but through our friends and allies in the Asia Pacific region," the official said.
EV mandate rollback: Trump will focus on rolling back EPA tailpipe emissions rules that Republicans have characterized as an effective requirement for consumers to buy electric vehicles.
- The president "will put an end to the electric vehicle mandate," the official said.
Withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement: Trump, who pulled the U.S. from the 2015 climate deal in his first term, had promised to do it again.
Offshore wind ban: Trump will end leasing to "massive wind farms that degrade our natural landscapes and fail to serve American energy consumers," the White House press release stated.
Appliance efficiency standards: The administration will revert appliance energy efficiency rules back to what they were during Trump 1.0 after Biden strengthened them.
- Trump will end efforts to "curtail consumer choice" around shower heads, gas stoves, and dishwashers, the official said.
- Biden's DOE had strengthened rules on all three product categories.
