Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is "highly likely" to take over the ranking member spot on the Environment and Public Works Committee next year, he told Axios.
Why it matters: The widely anticipated move would give Whitehouse a continued committee platform to advocate for climate policy.
Zoom in: Whitehouse currently chairs the Budget Committee, which he's essentially turned into a climate panel.
If Democrats had won, it was possible that he stayed to keep up that charge. But he's senior on EPW, and the GOP sweep might make that a more appealing place to land.
Whitehouse has something of a firebrand reputation on climate issues. But he's quite bipartisan, having worked with Capito on the ADVANCE Act and 45Q legislation.
