The GOP's Senate victory gives it new power to dictate the IRA's future and who gets to serve at key agencies.
Why it matters: Republicans will have significant leverage with a 2025 tax bill and may be able to rewrite President Biden's signature climate law in their image.
Driving the news: Senate Republicans enter next year with a likely narrow majority and new leadership on committees and the top of their conference.
- Sen. John Thune or Sen. John Cornyn is likely to become majority leader. Sen. John Barrasso is set to forgo the Energy and Natural Resources gavel to be the No. 2 Senate Republican.
- Sen. Mike Lee, a conservative firebrand, is slated to chair ENR — if he doesn't end up in the new administration if former President Trump wins. That could lead to some gridlock and intense confirmation fights.
- Sen. Shelley Moore Capito is widely expected to take over the chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee.
The bottom line: Republicans are likely to use that power to put EPA climate regulations and longtime GOP targets, like the IRA's electric vehicle tax credit, under intense scrutiny.
