Infrastructure AI startup Buzz Solutions has raised a $20 million Series A to scale and develop its visual inspection product for utilities. 

Why it matters: Utilities face the combination of soaring electricity demand, extreme weather events and record wildfires.

Zoom in: The round was led by S3 Ventures and included existing investors GoPoint Ventures, HearstLab and Blackhorn Ventures.

Utilities are trying to do more data collection, becoming more proactive and less reactive, but the bottleneck is turning data into action, says Buzz Solutions co-founder and CEO Kaitlyn Albertoli.

How it works: Buzz Solutions has developed AI-powered analytics that work with different visual and inspection-oriented data sets collected by the utility. 

Utilities can use the analytics to understand things like wildfire risks, identifying electrical components that could get overheated or areas with especially dry vegetation. 

Other utilities are using the tools to help them manage, inspect and monitor under-construction solar farms.

Some others are using the AI product to find open capacity on towers that don't yet have conductors.

Catch up quick: The company says that in 2025 it had a 400% year-over-year revenue increase. 

Utility customers include Dominion Energy, the New York Power Authority, Ameren and American Electric Power.

Palo Alto, California-based Buzz Solutions was founded in 2017 after its co-founders met at Stanford during a course in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The big picture: Investors are backing startups that are developing AI tools to address grid constraints.

The power grid is a complicated and massive machine that stretches across generation, transmission, distribution, storage and consumption in homes or by industries like data centers.

Entrepreneurs are using AI to automate manual processes, ease data utilization, and simulate and predict outcomes throughout the power grid.
