At least three nuclear energy startups — Aalo Atomics, Antares Nuclear and Valar Atomics — have said their prototype reactors achieved or will achieve a self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction (aka criticality) by Saturday's deadline from the U.S. Energy Department's Advanced Reactor Pilot program.
Jacob DeWitte, CEO of program participant Oklo, says he expects five or six test reactors, including Oklo's, will reach criticality by month's end.
The big picture: The program is employing new techniques and taking cues from participants to kick-start the 75-year-old nuclear industry.
