ProLogium's agreement to go public via SPAC is the latest signal that solid-state batteries are nearing mainstream adoption and mass production.

Why it matters: This could lead to dramatically better EVs, electronics and grid storage.

The big picture: There only are a handful of companies manufacturing SSB, and they're producing in low volumes.

ProLogium is the closest to mass manufacturing, saying it's already shipped 800,000 of its third-gen battery cells from a large factory in Taiwan.

If the company can scale up a French factory, where it'll produce its fourth generation of cells, it could be one of the first to bring solid-state batteries into larger volume production.

Yes, but: ProLogium has been able to manufacture more quickly because its batteries are hybrids (i.e., not completely solid-state) and can be made with modified lithium-ion production.

The tech trade-off is that hybrids can be flammable and have lower energy density.

Catch up quick: ProLogium isn't the first solid-state battery player to turn to the public markets. QuantumScape, Solid Power and SES AI all used SPACs to debut years ago.

ProLogium previously raised $690 million from investors including Mercedes-Benz, Vinfast and Posco.

The bottom line: China will bet big on solid-state, the same way the country went all-in on lithium-ion manufacturing, which means Chinese battery conglomerates like CATL may push it across the mainstream finish line.
