Newly public geothermal developer Fervo Energy experienced a blowout this week at its first commercial power plant in Utah, a state official confirmed to Axios Pro.

Why it matters: It's a potential setback for the project, which propelled Fervo's blockbuster IPO this month.

Driving the news: The blowout occurred on Monday as Fervo was cleaning and repairing Well 6-IB, about 200 miles southwest of Salt Lake City,  according to a Utah Division of Water Rights summary shared with Axios Pro. 

"On Monday, Fervo Energy experienced an equipment failure in a single well at Cape Station, resulting in water being released from the well. This is an ordinary course well control situation and is not uncommon in geothermal," says Fervo spokesperson Melissa Mahoney. "There were no injuries, and there is no material impact to the Cape Station project or schedule. Cape Station operations continue safely and uninterrupted, while we work to remediate that single well."

"The well was being cleaned (plugs drilled out) and repaired (milling rough edges on casing) following stimulation activities, and newly generated fractures seem to have connected with pressurized fractures from an adjacent well, triggering an uncontrollable pressure surge," the Division of Water Rights statement says. "Required wellhead safety and incident prevention devices were not able to contain the surge, which led to the blowout."

The latest: No one was injured, and the incident did not cause environmental damage, the agency says, and Fervo followed proper safety procedures.

"All of the fluid that was discharged was non-hazardous, non-toxic stimulation water," Division of Water Rights spokesperson Audra Sorensen says. 

"Fervo immediately contacted the Utah Division of Water Rights and the BLM in compliance with incident protocol," according to the incident summary.

Fervo shares closed at $38.70 on Thursday afternoon.

What we're watching: Sorensen did not know whether Fervo equipment was damaged. 

"The blowout is expected to have little impact on the project's implementation schedule," per the summary from the department, nor "impair the power project from continuing." 

What they're saying: The blowout "speaks to the first-of-a-kind nature of the project," Graham Bain, principal analyst at research firm Enverus, tells Axios. 

"There are still challenges to overcome and learning to be done," Bain says. "These could delay timelines, but likely not by much." 

Context: Blowouts are rarer in geothermal energy than in oil and gas, says Geothermal Energy Advisors' managing director Philip Ball. 

Defunct developer Geodynamics experienced a blowout in 2009 at its enhanced geothermal system in Australia, which reportedly took 28 days to contain.

Developers tend to carry blowout insurance for such incidents, a source familiar with the sector tells Axios Pro. 

What's next: Fervo has hired consulting firm CUDD Well Control "to help with blowout containment and remediation, and to determine the cause of the incident," per the document.
