Scalvy, a developer of energy management tech for data centers and batteries, raised a $13.9 million Series A, CEO Mohamed Badawy tells Axios Pro. 

Why it matters: The modular approach aims to speed deployment and cut data center and energy storage costs.

The big picture: Power demand is expanding much faster than conventional energy delivery and infrastructure systems can handle.

Those systems — from big consumers like data centers to energy storage hubs like batteries — rely on external hardware to manage the flow of energy and interact with the grid. 

Such devices can be bulky and rely on expensive components, inflating costs, adding to project complexity and slowing deployment. 

How it works: Scalvy has developed modular tech it calls Power Neurons, which integrate with data center servers, energy storage systems, and EV batteries to obviate some of those external systems. 

"It combines three things: power conversion, energy management and grid interactivity," Badawy says. 

The latest: Silicon Badia and an undisclosed mobility and energy systems supplier led the startup's Series A.

Azolla Ventures, Climate Capital and Skyriver Ventures participated in the raise, which closed this month after a roughly six-month raise.

Follow the money: The Austin, Texas-based company previously raised $3.1 million.

State of play: Scalvy expects to complete product certification this year. It's started small field tests with companies in mobility, data centers and microgrids, Badawy says. 

It plans to generate revenue from royalty payments tied to its hardware reference designs, and from SaaS pricing for accompanying software and analytics.

What's next: It expects to begin larger deployments by the end of next year.
