Battery startup Lyten says it's moving quickly to restart production of Northvolt's lithium-ion battery factory. 

Why it matters: Lyten is the latest energy player to embrace tech that it can commercialize more quickly than its core technology. 

Zoom out: Many energy companies have used the playbook of turning to an entirely new technology that is faster to market than its original tech. 

Energy storage company Energy Vault initially focused on a novel gravity-based grid storage system, but morphed into an energy storage developer that today uses mostly lithium-ion batteries. 

Husk Power, a startup today deploying solar and batteries across India and Africa, was originally founded to sell a biomass gasification system that used rice husks as a feedstock to generate electricity. 

Next-gen solar panel maker Solexant pivoted from building cadmium telluride solar panels to making ones from copper indium gallium selenide, though neither of these strategies worked. 

Yes, but: Sometimes the original technology gets left by the wayside and never gets scaled at all. 

The intrigue: In Lyten's case, its faster tech is lithium-ion battery tech that Northvolt wasn't able to commercialize itself.

Lyten's chief sustainability and chief marketing officer Keith Norman says Northvolt faced "a perfect storm of issues," including its large debt load, contracts with tight timelines, and the inability to consistently make high-quality cells. 

Northvolt's bankruptcy wiped away the debt load, and Norman says a small team has quietly been proving it can raise the consistency of making quality cells. 

Driving the news: Lyten plans to start delivering Northvolt's commercial lithium-ion battery cells in the second half of 2026.

Lyten has put its plans to build a "gigawatt-scale" battery plant to scale its lithium-sulfur batteries in Reno, Nevada, on hold, Norman tells Axios Pro.

Lyten is instead building out its lithium-sulfur battery tech on a smaller, "hundreds of megawatt" scale in San Leandro, Calif., with the intention of selling those batteries to customers like drone, satellite and robot makers.

The key challenge is maintaining a profitable facility while scaling from megawatts to gigawatts, says Norman.

Follow the money: Norman says Lyten has continued to raise equity financing from existing and new investors, but declined to name the amount.

Lyten raised $200 million round last year, and Norman says it has over a thousand investors, including Stellantis, FedEx, Honeywell, Walbridge, Prime Movers Lab, the European Investment Fund, and the Luxembourg Future Fund.

Lyten also sold off part of the land it acquired in the Northvolt deal, to EQT's EdgeConneX, to develop a large data center, which will help fund working capital for the Sweden battery facility.

The bottom line: Lyten now has an ambitious and capital-intensive plan to scale both battery technologies.
