Hyperscaler urgency and reformed permitting are fueling fusion startup Helion's vision to build the world's first fusion plant in Malaga, Washington by 2028. 

Why it matters: The company, backed by Sam Altman and Softbank, is one of a small group of fusion firms that are racing toward commercialization.

Driving the news: Helion announced Wednesday that it broke ground on  "Orion," a 50 MW fusion plant that is planned to deliver electricity into the Mid-Columbia grid to power Microsoft's data centers. 

Zoom in: "The urgency has turned up" for vast scales of power as soon as you can get it, Helion CEO and co-founder David Kirtley tells Axios Pro.

Fast-tracked permitting is also aiding the startup. The federal ADVANCE Act, passed last year, means fusion is largely regulated by states and counties.

Chelan County in Washington decided earlier this year that Helion doesn't need to do an often-lengthy environmental impact statement.

Reality check: Helion still needs to meet important tech milestones for its Polaris machine, a precursor to Orion.

Kirtley says "the early parts" of Polaris came online last year, and Helion is continuing to operate it, making plasma and "showing the beginning operations."

The intrigue: However, Kirtley shied away from discussing whether Polaris would demonstrate "net generation," when a fusion reaction produces more energy than is required to initiate it.

"I'm being careful about what we mean by net and generation, because when you think about a fusion system and all of the ancillary parts, you have to be really thoughtful about what you mean by that," he says. 

Follow the money: Helion closed a $425 million Series F round earlier this year, with a post-money valuation over $5.4 billion.

Lightspeed Venture Partners and SoftBank Vision Fund 2 participated in the round, as well as existing investors Altman, Mithril Capital, Capricorn Investment Group, Nucor, and Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, through Good Ventures Foundation.

The Series F will fund Polaris operations and milestones and then the beginning of the building and construction of Orion, as well as all of the manufacturing, Kirtley says. He declined to comment on future fundraises. 

Kirtley sees bigger funds making fusion investments, and the trend is moving beyond seed stage and into growth and deployment stage. 

What's next: If Helion is able to prove fusion at scale, it'll also face the issue of scaling a supply chain for a brand new sector. It has a 500 MW development deal with industrial giant Nucor. 

Helion plans to expand its capacitor manufacturing by 50 times in the U.S. and its machine shop that makes magnets in Everett, Washington, by 10 times.

The company also needs semiconductors, and Kirtley says Helion made a large investment with an external firm to be able to make "100 times the manufacturing rate of semiconductors than we have in the past." 

"We have a lot of work to do there," says Kirtley.

The bottom line: If Helion is able to deliver its 2028 goal, it would be a world-changing project, but there's considerable uncertainty in a short time frame.
