Mill, the food recycling startup has generated more than $20 million in revenue over the trailing 12 months, and is launching a workplace business, Mill CEO Matt Rogers tells Axios. 

Why it matters: Rogers previously co-founded Nest, the smart thermostat company that was acquired by Google in 2014 for $3.2 billion.

Zoom in: Rogers says that Mill, which has raised over $100 million to date, has "tens of thousands" of users, and sees an opportunity in helping companies reduce food waste and cleaning fees as well as meet carbon reduction goals. 

Mill says early commercial customers include real estate investor Vornado Realty Trust, and Duolingo in its New York office. Mill devices are currently used in "a couple hundred offices," says Rogers. 

Rogers says Mill doesn't need to raise funding to support the workplace launch and is "still in really good shape." 

How it works: The hardware for the workplace is the same as the consumer version, but office customers, who pay a subscription, get extra software to monitor waste and carbon emissions. 

Office customers, who pay a subscription, also get access to a service that can help with installing and setting up the bins and trouble shooting.

Rogers says Mill food recyclers are about an order of magnitude more efficient at lowering emissions than retrofitting an office with LED lighting. 

Catch up quick: Mill launched its food recycler about two years ago and investors include Prelude, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lower Carbon, Energy Impact Partners, GV (Google Ventures) and Rogers.

The device heats up and grinds down food waste into dry grounds that can be composted in a backyard garden, composted in a city's service, or consumed by animals like chickens.

The big picture: Food waste is a massive climate, economic and societal problem, and contributes to some 8% of greenhouse gas emissions.

What's next: Down the road, Mill says it will likely develop larger and smaller versions of its food recyclers to target different markets like grocery stores, restaurants, and apartments.
