Amp Robotics, a developer of trash-sorting robots and recycling facilities, closed a $91 million Series D.

Why it matters: The company has shifted to operating entire sorting facilities from supplying robotic arms to customers.

The big picture: Amp operates three waste sorting and recycling facilities in Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia, and it's commissioning a fourth in Colorado.

Flashback: The company got its start developing robotic arms and AI software to quickly spot and sort waste to make recycling more efficient, deploying about 400 of the devices.

The latest: Earlier this year it announced a new focus on building standalone facilities, which now generate a majority of the company's revenue, an Amp spokesperson tells Axios.

The company also brought on board Tim Stuart, former COO of waste handling giant Republic Services, as its new CEO.

Driving the news: Amp closed its Series D on Nov. 21, led by Congruent Ventures.

Liberty Mutual Investments and California State Teachers Retirement System participated, as well as existing investors Sequoia Capital, XN, Blue Earth Capital, Wellington Management, Range Ventures, and Tao Capital Partners.

Amp launched the raise in Q1. Congruent Ventures partner Tanuj Dutta joined the company's board.

Context: The raise matches the $91 million Series C that Amp closed in 2022.

How it works: Amp typically charges a per ton sorting fee for its recycling systems, Stuart tells Axios. The Louisville, Colo.-based company calls the model "sortation as a service."

Between the lines: The automated systems recover more material that a waste facility can then sell, Amp says. The tech also reduces worker exposure to dangerous materials and equipment.

What's next: Amp expects to begin operating its Colorado facility in 2026.
