Everest Carbon, a startup making a sensor for monitoring carbon removal, has launched and raised $3 million, the company tells Axios.

Why it matters: The fast-growing carbon removal sector requires more verification and monitoring.

Catch up quick: Everest's sensor is specifically for monitoring the carbon removal subset called Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), which is a process of spreading pulverized rock on farmland. 

The rock reacts with carbon dioxide in the soil, and the CO2 is sequestered. The process can also make the soil healthier and increase crop productivity.

The market for carbon removal, including ERW, is largely reliant on companies with environmental goals to buy the carbon removal credits. 

Tech giant Microsoft is the world's largest buyer of carbon removal credits, purchasing from companies like Lithos Carbon.

How it works: Project developers install Everest's sensors in the ground. 

The sensors detect the alkalinity of the soil in real time and ensure that carbon removal is occurring. 

The project developers use the data for verification of projects and to gain carbon removal credits. 

Currently, project developers are reliant on highly manual, complex and expensive ways to verify projects. 

Carbon removal tech ranges from direct air capture, to ocean-based removal, to ERW.

Zoom in: Everest Carbon, with offices in San Francisco and Linz, Austria, said it raised the seed financing from Carbon Removal Partners, Ponderosa Ventures, and Carbon Drawdown Initiative.

The company, founded in 2022, will use the funds to expand manufacturing and deployments of its sensors, said Everest Carbon co-founder and CEO Pascal Michel. Everest currently has customers in Europe, said Michel, but he declined to name them. 

"Measurement is holding back enhanced rock weathering from significantly larger demand from carbon credit buyers," said Michel.

What's next: Scientists say that low-cost carbon removal technologies will be needed to remove gigatons of carbon by 2050 and hit carbon reduction goals.
