Vantem Global is raising a $30 million Series C to vastly expand production of energy-efficient modular homes, the company tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: The Breakthrough Energy-backed startup has big manufacturing ambitions, eyeing 20 new factories in the next seven years.

How it works: Vantem Global manufactures insulated panels that it assembles into single-family homes and multiunit residential buildings, each with the plumbing, wiring, and other fixtures already installed.

"The only thing left to do is the foundation," CEO Chris Anderson tells Axios.

The company says its structures are 10-20% cheaper to build, more energy efficient, and generate less waste than conventional construction.

The Greensboro, North Carolina-based company initially targeted Latin America, launching production in 2010 in Bolivia and then Uruguay to make buildings such as schools and hotels.

Zoom in: Vantem opened its first U.S. factory in Georgia in 2023. It plans to open its second domestic plant in South Carolina in September — and is anticipating 18 more by 2031.

"We're in the black and scaling quite rapidly," Anderson says.

Driving the news: Vantem launched an equity raise in February to begin driving the expansion, buttressed by debt financing.

"We're in the term-sheet stage," Anderson tells Axios. He anticipates closing this summer.

Follow the money: It has previously raised $36 million in equity investment and $16 million in debt.

Investors include Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures, private equity firm Quadrant Management, and family office Hunt Capital Partners.

What we're watching: "This is probably the last raise we'll have to do," Anderson says.

"The most likely route for us is IPO — four, five, six, seven years out. But you take the opportunities as they come."
