Arboretum LifeSciences said Tuesday it raised a $30 million Series A.

State of play: It is open to more health system partners as it grows its precision medicine and molecular information platform, CEO Anthony Philippakis tells Axios Pro.

Follow the money: F-Prime, GV, .406 Ventures, Hims & Hers and Amgen participated in the round.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Arboretum has raised $35 million to date and has at least three years of runway, says Philippakis, who is also a partner at GV.

The big picture: Precision medicine has become an established approach to drug development and treatment, particularly in cancer, where biomarker-driven therapies are increasingly common.

How it works: Arboretum uses AI and genetic testing to expand access to genomic medicine for heart, metabolic, autoimmune and other diseases. It also enables recruitment of genomically profiled patients for clinical research partners.

What they're saying: "Arboretum is a company that absolutely straddles the divide between tech and biotech," Philippakis says. "The goal is to make precision medicine a reality for common diseases, doing what was done in a previous era for rare diseases and cancer."

Zoom in: Arboretum enables genomically stratified clinical development and new commercialization models for drug developers.

The company provides clinical genetic testing and a collaborative research network for health system partners, such as Advocate Health and Providence Healthcare.

Case in point: Arboretum is helping enable genetic testing through Advocate Health's national cardiogenetic service line.

What's next: "We'll be expanding precision medicine programs with a lot of additional health care systems in the next couple of years," says president Clare Bernard.

Fun fact: The company's name is inspired by walking meetings Philippakis and Bernard took in Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bottom line: "These are ideas that Clare and I have been wrestling with for a good five or six years, and then finally, about two years ago, decided it was time to pull the trigger," Philippakis says.
