Axiomatic AI, a verification company for engineering-focused AI, raised an $18 million seed round, CEO Jake Taylor tells Axios exclusively.

The big picture: Complex scientific and engineering processes still depend on rigorous validation, even as AI generates rapid iterations.

How it works: The Cambridge, Mass.-based company validates AI-generated engineering work against the laws of math and physics before it's used in the real world.

Between the lines: Taylor says the focus will be reliability rather than output as AI spreads into physical-world industries like materials and bioscience.

"I don't mind if my poet's not trustworthy," he says. "But I do mind if my car isn't."

Bridges and planes are stress-tested before they're put into use, he says, and Axiomatic applies that same idea to AI.

"Investors understand that verification is important," Taylor says. "But it can be hard to know what is blocked if you don't have it."

Context: The round was led by Engine Ventures, with additional participating investors including Kleiner Perkins, Big Sur Ventures, Global Vision Capital, Propagator Ventures and Liquid 2.
