Axios Tampa Bay

Welcome to Thursday, Tampa Bay.
- ☔️🤞🙏 We don't want to jinx it, but there's a slight chance of rain today. Highs in the mid-80s.
Situational awareness: CVS Health is offering mental health counseling services at six Tampa Bay-area stores — in Tampa, Riverview, Wesley Chapel, Clearwater, Largo and St. Pete — one of the first markets to launch these services.
Today's newsletter is 876 words, a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: The rise and fall of Florida's Confederate monuments

We're keeping the big thing short today. This map is powerful enough on its own.
Where things stand: Two of the seven Confederate statues near Tampa Bay still remain:
- The Stonewall Jackson Monument in Ft. Meade.
- A Confederate soldier statue outside a Brooksville courthouse.
When the others came down: Most Confederate monuments in Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas counties were removed in 2017 after white supremacists rioted in Charlottesville.
- An exception: The Cow Cavalry Monument in Plant City was removed along with nine others around the state in 2020.

2. Pasco sheriff retreats on using student data

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco will bar school resource officers from accessing student records, per the Tampa Bay Times
- He said he's voluntarily updating the county's policy to "ease any anxiety that parents may have as a result of misinformation perpetuated by media reports."
- The walk-back comes after a series in the Tampa Bay Times into how deputies used school data to try to predict future criminal behavior. The series prompted an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Nocco denies his agency ever used "predictive policing" and said the policy update just "reflects that reality."
🏆 Times journalists Kathleen McGrory and Neil Bedi recently won the prestigious Scripps Howard Award in the local/regional investigative reporting category for the series.
