🌅 Hi and hello! It's Thursday, and Thursday definitely has a feel.
☀️ Today's weather: Sunny, highs in the mid-70s, lows near 50.
🎧 Sounds like: "Tension Head" by Queens of the Stone Age.
Today's newsletter is 516 words — a 2-minute read.
1 big thing: 💸 Gauging a gas tax holiday
The gas price surge is reigniting political chatter about suspending the federal gas tax to help us drivers deal.
Why it matters: The average price for a gallon of gas in SF yesterday was an eye-watering $6.36 (and experts warn it could get much higher).
- All 50 states are now north of 4 bucks a gallon as the impact of the Iran War reverberates across the economy.
Reality check: Pausing the 18.3-cent-a-gallon federal tax is one of those go-to ideas that never actually happens, but often surfaces when prices climb.
- Congress would have to approve a suspension, and never has to date. But political winds could shift in these not-so-normal times.
- Gov. Newsom already dismissed the idea of suspending the state's 61-cent-per-gallon tax, the highest in the nation.
By the numbers: Suspending the federal gas tax would lower gas prices by 10 to 16 cents per gallon for consumers, per the Bipartisan Policy Center.
- Yes, but: It wouldn't come close to offsetting the nearly $1.50-per-gallon gas price jump since the war started.
Of note: Most of the suspension gets passed along to consumers, but suppliers still take a cut.
- A tax holiday, depending on the duration, would slash federal revenues used for maintaining the nation's highways.
Stunning stat: The energy consultancy Rapidan Energy Group saw 25% odds that Congress takes the leap.
- Those odds will rise the longer the disruption persists and the more prices climb, Glenn Schwartz, the firm's director of energy policy, told Axios earlier this month.

3. 🐾 Pets of SF: Sunshine
🌞 Meet Sunshine.
Sunshine, of the Outer Sunset, is a local celebrity of sorts, and tends to exude ... well ... sunshine!
- "The other day, someone I didn't know yelled 'Hi Sunshine!' as we walked past," owner Natalie M. tells us.
This happy pooch is all about soaking up her namesake in the backyard, prancing at the beach and snuggling up for a movie night, Natalie said.
🐾 Naturally, "101 Dalmations" is one of her favorites.
