Axios Salt Lake City

May 27, 2026
It's Wednesday!
- 🌙 We're wishing a joyful Eid al-Adha to all who celebrate. Eid Mubarak.
☀️ Today's weather: Sunny, high of 86, low of 57.
Today's newsletter is 971 words — a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: Hive Pass, we hardly knew ya
Salt Lake City's Hive Pass would be eliminated under the mayor's proposed budget, so we asked you to weigh in on the possible cut.
Why it matters: For $42 a month, the Hive Pass provides city residents unlimited access to Utah Transit Authority buses, TRAX and FrontRunner.
- A standard unlimited transit pass, by comparison, costs $170 a month.
State of play: The program is on the chopping block as the mayor's office looks to trim the budget amid inflation and rising costs.
By the numbers: A majority of our 25 survey respondents said they hadn't been aware the pass existed.
- And most of those said they would have taken advantage of the pass if they had.
🗣️ Your thoughts:
- "I use the Hive Pass to commute to work, and eliminating that would be greatly detrimental."
- "Public transportation is a crucial part of my daily commute, and losing access to the Hive Pass would be devastating."
- "The Hive Pass is one of the biggest benefits to living in Salt Lake City. It should/should have been publicized that way. ... Advertise the program, don't cut it!"
- "As a new resident of downtown/the Avenues, I would love to utilize public transport!!"
The intrigue: Only about 400 people use the pass, according to Andrew Wittenberg, a spokesperson for the mayor's office.
- The low utilization has raised questions over how the pass has been marketed to residents.
The city's transportation division said in a statement to Axios that it promoted the Hive Pass through direct community outreach and public events.
- Last summer, the division visited six community events, including the Downtown Farmers Market and the Urban Flea Market, to promote transportation options, per the statement.
What's next: The Salt Lake City Council is expected to finalize the budget on June 16.
- Residents can email [email protected] or call 801-535-7654 to leave feedback on the budget plan.
2. 🫣 In other transit news... Trax detours coming
UTA riders should brace for delays of 30 minutes or more through June 20 as repairs are made on the 2100 South grade crossing.
State of play: Work to rebuild the crossing and replace rail near 200 West will disrupt service on three busy stretches of TRAX light rail lines:
- Blue and Red lines: Service will be suspended between Ballpark and Meadowbrook stations, with a bus bridge replacing trains along the route.
- Green Line: Trains will stop running between Ballpark and River Trail stations. A bus bridge will also be available.
3. Dog-friendly patios — with or without kids
It's patio season at Salt Lake restaurants, which means Fido is in for a treat.
Yes, but: Dog-friendly doesn't necessarily mean family-friendly.
By the numbers: Of almost 50 Salt Lake County eateries with health officials' approval to welcome dogs, 20 are bars that can't allow (human) children under Utah law.
The intrigue: A lot of bars don't seem family-unfriendly — especially during daytime meals.
- The baby brunch boot is practically a rite of passage for new Salt Lake parents who return to their favorite Sunday haunt, only for a host to remind them that their bundle of joy does not appear to be 21.
To help keep your dog-friendly patios straight, we mapped them with icons that signal whether they're adults-only bars (🍸) or family-friendly eateries (🍴).
Here are some of our faves that allow the pitter patter of tiny feet in twos AND fours:
- 🍔 Cotton Bottom Inn, Holladay
- 🍳 Atomic Biscuit, Granary
- ☕️ Tea Zaanti, Sugar House
- 🍅 Root'd, Cottonwood Heights
- 🇮🇹 Caputo's, 15th & 15th
- 🍕 The Bambino, Midvale
- ⚾️ Park Café, Liberty Park
4. Fry Sauce: CD 1's progressive rivals
🗳️ State Sen. Nate Blouin says he will exit the First Congressional District primary if his internal polling shows another progressive-leaning candidate is likelier to win. (KUER)
- That excludes former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams, who positioned himself as a centrist during his 2018 term and has led the race so far.
🧐 The government watchdog group Utah Civic Compact says the state Military Installation Development Authority illegally rushed steps in the approval process for the controversial Box Elder County data center proposal. (FOX 13)

5. SLC takes: Big boss edition
Our publisher Nicholas Johnston came to town — briefly — for our recent event on AI.
- Here are his notes from his first visit back to Salt Lake City in more than 20 years:
🚞 The airport train is excellent! One of the best in the U.S. Just $2.50 and super fast to downtown, though it shouldn't stop at red lights. Give the train priority!
🏛️ The Capitol. Very formidable Capitol Hill — and the view is easily a top three capitol vista, rivaling even the U.S. Capitol's west view of the Mall. Only the second of 18 I've been to without a metal detector when visitors enter.
- Other takeaways: The marble insight is very bright and striking. Senate chamber is tiny. What's the deal with the random house across the street on the South front? Somebody lives there?
🤠 Cowboy Cuisine. Get the charred cabbage at Brownstone 22. Steak was good, but I think Erin liked her elk more.
- 🍸 Can also recommend the Bill's Perfect Martini. True to Utah form, not overwhelming or incapacitating like some martinis.
✈️ Airport lounge. When your flight is cancelled and you have to rebook two hours later, the American Express lounge is one of the best in America. Terrific views from the terrace!
Editor's note: Friday's story about the proposed Box Elder County data center has been corrected to say the facility is projected to more than triple Utah's total energy use (not quadruple it).
🫣 Kim was terrified by "Obsession" last night.
😍 Erin was mostly not terrified by "The Mandalorian and Grogu."
