🍷 Sunrise greetings from Napa Valley, where I'm in town for some VC event stuff. Plus wine, so it's probably best that Lucinda handle the newsletter tomorrow morning. Have a great long weekend, and I'll be back with you on Tuesday.
📺 "People really want me to die." Check out a new episode of The Axios Show, featuring Madison Mills' conversation with longevity entrepreneur and influencer Bryan Johnson. Watch here.
Top of the Morning
Venture capital is in the midst of a record-shattering year, but the big numbers mask some underlying softness.
- In short, there's tons of money for startups squarely in the AI bucket. If not, good luck to you.
Driving the news: Venture capitalists invested over $98 billion into 3,640 U.S. companies in the third quarter, according to the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor released this morning.
- That's a bit of a slowdown from the first two quarters of 2026, likely because both Anthropic and OpenAI took a breather.
- The 2026 total now stands at $516 billion invested, which is 44% higher than the highest full-year tally (2021) and 61% more than last year's total.
Zoom in: AI accounted for a whopping 82.7% of deal value in 2026 and around 45% of deal count.
- That sort of sector concentration surpasses even dotcom days, and poses challenges for maintaining a diverse startup ecosystem. And that's exacerbated by increased fundraising challenges for emerging managers, as LPs plow more and more commitments into mega-scale firms.
- Moreover, 90% of disbursements are for rounds of at least $50 million, up from 77% in 2025. And the market's longstanding exit problems persist.
- Venture is at its best when it's taking lots of shots on different goals, rather than all firing at the same corner of the same net.
Yes, but: Categorizing companies as "AI" is getting increasingly murky, as virtually every startup marketer has gotten the memo. And inflation is distorting historical dollar data.
The bottom line: The bull case is that a rising tide will eventually lift all ships, and returns will get recycled into larger and more sustained LP allocations to venture. The bear case is that there's too much cargo at the bow, without enough accessible drainage.
The BFD
Spectrum Equity Investors tells Axios that it's raised $2.5 billion for its eleventh flagship fund, with a continued focus on tech companies.
Why it's the BFD: This is one of the few veteran growth equity/buyout firms not motoring up-market, despite the siren call of lucrative fees.
- Spectrum raised $2.2 billion for its tenth flagship fund in 2022.
The bottom line: "When you look at things like our at-entry revenue and employee headcount, it's been remarkably consistent over the last 15 years. Median revenue in the low 20s and median enterprise value in the mid-to-high 100s. If you squint you can see marginal differences in enterprise value, but we're not chasing the unicorn phenomenon." — Spectrum managing director Ben Spero

Final Numbers

Hedge funds are playing an increasingly important role in the two hottest markets of the moment — U.S. Treasury securities and AI stocks — and they're doing it with a lot of borrowed money, Axios' Emily Peck reports:
- "In times of stress, unwinding that borrowing, or leverage, can turn a sell-off into a crisis that spreads beyond hedge funds into the banking system and the wider economy.
- "That was the message from a report out Tuesday from the International Monetary Fund, which in its measured way delivered a sharp warning about the growing risk that hedge funds pose to global markets."
