π Good morning. It's Thursday.
βοΈ Today's weather: Sunny, with a high of 79 and a low of 72.
π Happy birthday to our Axios Miami member Philip O'Brien!
π₯Ύ Sounds like: "The Long And Winding Road," The Beatles.
Today's newsletter is 1,047 words β a 4-minute read
1 big thing: πΆπ» 1 long walk
A 22-year-old social media personality is attempting to walk an outline of the continental U.S. β and he's passing through South Florida this week.
The big picture: Jack Kadis, who has racked up over 100,000 followers on Instagram, has been walking about 11 miles a day for 69 consecutive days β beginning Jan. 14 in Virginia and following the coastline south.
- He posts videos of each day's walk, including interactions with fans, and sets up camp at nearby parks or on private property with the permission of supporters he meets along his route.
What they're saying: Axios Miami caught up with Kadis as he walked along State Road A1A in Boca Raton and asked him what his motivation was for the cross-country trek.
- He said entertaining his audience is a major reason, but also representing his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
- "That's pretty cool to have friends and family reach out because they get to sort of be a part of it, too. Just because I'm the one walking doesn't mean that everyone isn't sort of walking, in a sense."
During our interview, supporter James Laferrara, of Boca Raton, stopped to meet Kadis, tracking his location from the daily routes Kadis posts on his page.
- Laferrara told Axios one of Kadis' videos popped up on his Instagram feed and he thought, "Wow, this is actually kind of sick."
- "I'm like, he's traveled more than I ever have in my life so far. I've never even left Florida and this man just came back from North Carolina."
Kadis says he's grateful to have met so many kind strangers along his route, but being by himself and so far from home has started to take its toll.
- "You meet these great people and you become such good friends with all these strangers, but every day I go 11 miles south, so that's been starting to sort of eat away at me."
- For context, it took a Virginia Beach man 29 months to walk the 11,500-mile circumference of the continental U.S. in 2016.
What's next: Kadis should be crossing through Miami soon.
2. πOur declining orange production
Florida's orange crop has dropped by 95% in just 30 years β a decline that's forced citrus farmers to change how they grow and sell the fruit, WLRN reported.
Why it matters: A decade ago, Florida was the country's top citrus producer, but it has since fallen behind California, according to the USDA.
- Today, the industry generates about $7 billion annually and supports around 30,000 jobs, per the outlet.
The big picture: While diets and fruit juice consumption have changed in recent decades, citrus farmers attribute the drastic decline more so to disaster, disease and development.
Zoom in: The industry has been dealing with citrus greening disease, which was first noticed in groves about 20 years ago.
- The bug, caused by a bacterial infection, causes the fruit to turn green and taste less sweet than its bright orange counterparts.
Meanwhile, this year's cold weather spell cost the industry nearly $700 million, and recent hurricanes have dealt a hefty blow.

4. Miami is getting a Tony Robbins hologram
A new immersive experience will bring the words of motivational speaker Tony Robbins to Miami audiences using his voice and a hologram of his likeness.
The big picture: "Breakthrough," a new "immersive personal transformation experience" Robbins is co-developing, is scheduled to launch here next year.
What's inside: The exhibit, co-developed by Maestro Exhibits, will feature five immersive zones guided by Robbins' voice, according to its website.
- In one zone, rain water will pour down around visitors, who will be kept dry by a LIDAR tracking system that creates a "personal dry zone around each visitor."
- In another area, guests will be in a pitch-black environment and will need to shout to illuminate a path forward.
