1 big thing: Cinco de Mayo Festival takes over Civic Center Park
Denver's annual Cinco de Mayo Festival returns this weekend, bringing a taste of Mexican culture to Civic Center Park.
What to expect: The family-friendly festival kicks off Saturday, with more than 350,000 visitors anticipated during downtown's two-day celebration that includes food, art and contests.
- The event will boast three stages abuzz with cultural showcases, like music and dance.
- Local vendors will bring handcrafted goods and merch, plus Mexican food favorites like tacos and tamales.
State of play: Can't-miss events include a Chihuahua race at noon and a taco-eating contest Saturday, and a lowrider car exhibit Sunday, showcasing custom cars, trucks and bicycles.
Zoom in: The event will have a family fun zone for kids with educational programming.
Context: Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862, and it's often marked in the United States with celebrations of Mexican culture.

🏇 Denver Derby Day 2025 will bring a taste of the American South to the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Denver with a brunch and watch party for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Price: Starting at $67
🤠 Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will perform their country and Americana tunes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Saturday. Price: Starting at $61

What we're watching: A star-studded remake of an 1980s comedy, the sequel to 2018's "A Simple Favor," and a new season of "Chef's Table" featuring four food industry titans.
