👋 It's Esteban, coming to you with the deets about a beloved festival's finale.
🎧 Sounds like: "YCGI" by Povi.
Today's newsletter is 634 words — a 2-minute read.
1 big thing: UMS preps for its swan song
The sun will soon set on the Underground Music Showcase.
The big picture: The indie music festival announced earlier this year its 25th edition would be its last — and organizers are planning an epic swan song starting tomorrow.
What they're saying: "We can't predict the future — but we can promise this: The final UMS in its current form will be legendary," its website reads.
Why it matters: The cultural spectacle on South Broadway made it a mission to elevate new and independent rollicking voices, and will be sorely missed in a city with few major music festivals.
State of play: More than 200 artists will perform across four stages and 12 venues over the weekend.
Three local acts to check out:
- DeVotchKa: Founded in Denver, these UMS headliners playing Sunday on the Showcase Stage are perhaps best known for providing the uplifting sound behind the popular indie film "Little Miss Sunshine."
- Nina de Freitas: The Brazilian-born singer will perform tomorrow and Sunday, serenading the crowds with her soulful, longing ballads.
- Keenan TreVon: Hailing from Aurora, TreVon makes his UMS debut this year, bringing his upbeat, poppy, occasionally bedroom-rock to the Hi Dive tomorrow.
If you go: Weekend passes are still available starting at $150, including ticket and fees, while single-day tickets start at $88, including fees.
- The festival runs along South Broadway between Sixth and Alameda. Hours will vary tomorrow (4pm–2am), Saturday (2pm–2am) and Sunday (2pm–11pm).

3. 📺 New movies and shows this week
Here's what's new on Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV+ and Prime Video.
What we're watching: The highly anticipated sequel to "Happy Gilmore," a new adventure series about a young "Black genius," and a documentary chronicling the history of hip-hop.
"Happy Gilmore 2" available tomorrow on Netflix
What's inside: This sequel, almost 30 years in the making, follows the titular character's comeback to the golf course with Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald reprising their roles.
What they're saying: "The chaos in golf, [how] the sport is changing, the different factions and different, wild ways you can play golf did inform the decision to make this movie now," director Kyle Newacheck tells Axios.
"Washington Black" available now on Hulu
State of play: Based on the novel of the same name, this series follows the 19th-century, globe-trotting adventure of an 11-year-old escaped slave and science prodigy.
What they're saying: Executive producer Selwyn Seyfu Hinds tells Axios that while the story begins on a plantation, "Washington Black" is not about slavery.
- "This is a story about a Black genius," Hinds says. "This is a story about a kid who literally flies."
"Hip Hop Was Born Here" available now on Paramount+
The intrigue: LL Cool J hosts this series that charts the history and legacy of hip-hop as a genre and cultural movement.
Behind the scenes: Guest appearances include Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Jadakiss, Method Man, Rev Run and Roxanne Shanté.
Our picks:
🍕 John is making a Palisade peachza (a peach pizza) like this one from Cart Driver in LoHi.
🎶 Alayna is excited to see Of Montreal celebrate the 20th anniversary of arguably their best album at the Gothic Theatre on Saturday.
🎧 Esteban is checking out more music from the many artists at UMS.
