1 big thing: 🎬 What to watch at the Boulder International Film Festival
The Boulder International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, bringing new films and documentaries — many with Colorado connections — to local screens.
Why it matters: Even as the arrival of Sundance grabs attention, Boulder's long-running event continues to draw global filmmakers while sharing homegrown stories.
What we're watching: Among 68 films, here are a few screenings featuring in-person appearances.
🚲 "No Hands: The Wild Ride of the Schwinn Bicycle Company"
This documentary, narrated by cycling legend Lance Armstrong, pays homage to the Schwinn Bicycle Company.
Zoom in: The company once briefly called Boulder home, and executive producer Jim Packer is a University of Colorado graduate.
- When and where: 12:15pm Saturday at Boulder Theater
- Who will be there: Jim Packer, director Daniel Clarke, producer David Brookwell and writer/executive producer Carl Cramer in person.
🧗♀️ "Girl Climber"
Following Boulder native and pro climber Emily Harrington as she attempts a career-defining 24-hour ascent of El Capitan. The film reckons with risk after a near-fatal fall.
- When and where: 5pm Saturday at Grace Commons Church
- Who will be there: Emily Harrington, director Jon Glassberg and producer Tyler Young.
⚡️ "Old Man Lightning"
This one's local tie is really just to "bouldering," but the nod to climbing culture tracks legend John "Verm" Sherman as he returns to Yosemite's Midnight Lightning, a route tied to his legacy. The film is directed by Dawn Kish.
- When and where: 4pm Sunday at Grace Commons Church
- Who will be there: John Sherman, Dawn Kish and climber Cedar Wright.
🏔️ "The Dark Wizard"
From Boulder's Sender Films, this series chronicles the life of Dean Potter, one of the most influential and controversial figures in adventure sports, who died in a 2015 accident. BIFF will show an advance screening of the series' first four episodes.
When and where:
- Episodes 1–2, 7pm tomorrow at Grace Commons Church
- Episodes 3–4, 7:30pm Saturday at Grace Commons Church
- Who will be there: Directors Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen and producers Olivia Ahnemann, Zachary Barr and Halle Johns.

🤫 If you want more movies, attend the Denver Silent Film Festival starting tomorrow. The weekend-long event at the Sie FilmCenter features eight silent-era full-length films and 11 shorts from early cinema.
- All are presented with live accompaniment by local musicians. Tickets start at $13.
🚙 The Colorado Auto Show — the third-oldest in the nation — runs tomorrow through Sunday at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Doors open at 10am each day. Tickets start at $16.
🎭 The Denver Center for the Performing Arts presents its latest Shakespeare in the Parking Lot series at the Women's Bean Project, 1300 W. Alameda Ave.
- An abridged performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" starts at noon Saturday. Free.
🎧 The Rocky Mountain Record Show takes over the Sports Castle this weekend with 150,000 records for sale from 75+ vendors, including local shops like Wax Trax and Vinyl Valhalla, as well as vinyl DJs, a bar and food trucks.
- The event runs 10am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday. Tickets start at $7.
🚂 The Rocky Mountain Train Show returns at the National Western Center with operating train displays and more than 100 vendors and manufacturers. It's the largest train show west of the Mississippi.
- Doors open at 9am Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $16.
🥳 Denver's South High School is celebrating 100 years on Saturday with alumni reunions, school events and tours. The event starts at 10am. Free.
🪁 The Arvada Kite Festival is Sunday at Stenger Sports Complex at 58th Avenue and Quail Street. The festivities run 11am to 4pm with kite demonstrations, local vendors, food trucks and kids' activities. Free.
🏃 The Platte River Half Marathon, relay and 5K goes down Sunday in Littleton.
- The races start at Reynold's Landing trailhead near Breckenridge Brewery, which will host the post-race party with food, vendors, live music and beer. Registration starts at $68.42 plus fees.

"Hacks" — Season 5 available today on HBO Max
- After TMZ falsely reports her death, stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) returns, determined to get an EGOT before anyone writes her off for good.
- It's the final season of the critically acclaimed comedy that earned Smart four Emmys and co-star Hannah Einbinder one.
"Euphoria" — Season 3 available Sunday on HBO Max
- After a five-year time jump, the group is out of high school and navigating marriages, a movie studio lot, Mexico and all kinds of new trouble.
- Catch up quick: Season 2 aired back in 2022, and Emmy winner Zendaya has suggested this will be the final season.
"Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair" — available tomorrow on Hulu
- In the limited four-episode series that's available roughly 20 years since the original show's finale, Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) now has a daughter and girlfriend — and is desperately trying to avoid his parents and brothers.
- Fun fact: The role of Dewey was recast because the original actor, Erik Per Sullivan, retired from acting. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek return as Malcom's parents.
