1 big thing: Southwest bag fees go into effect tomorrow
The LUV airline will start operating a lot like other carriers tomorrow, with checked bag fees and a new fare type with limitations.
Why it matters: Southwest has prided itself on its "bags fly free" policy, flexible fares and open seating, but all of those perks are about to change.
- The Dallas-based carrier announced the new policies two months ago, and its reputation has since taken a hit.
The latest: The changes are being rolled out in phases.
- Starting tomorrow, Southwest will impose checked bag fees for new and updated bookings and introduce a basic fare type that doesn't allow changes, same-day standby or transferable flight credits.
- Flight credits issued tomorrow or later will expire in six months or a year, depending on the traveler's fare type, rolling back the airline's three-year-old policy that said flight credits never expire.
The fine print: One checked bag will be $35 and a second bag $45, per the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
- Online self-service options will not be available at first, the airline said. Bag transactions will be processed at airports, either with an agent or at a kiosk.
Zoom in: Bookings made or changed today will still get two free checked bags, Southwest says.
- Rapid Rewards cardholders and up to eight people on the same reservation can get fees waived for their first bag.
- Companion pass holders' bag benefits will also extend to their companions.
Reality check: Carry-ons are free for everyone. After all, Southwest isn't Spirit.
Pro tips: If you need to change an existing booking or book a flight, try doing it today to keep your two free bags.
- A-List, A-List Preferred, and Rapid Rewards card members should include their Rapid Rewards number in their reservation to get their free bag benefit.
What's next: Southwest will switch to assigned seats next year. Reservations for those flights will start later this year.
2. ₿ Strategic bitcoin reserve in Texas
Texas lawmakers are looking to create a strategic bitcoin reserve for the state, mirroring the one created by President Trump's executive order.
Why it matters: Texas would become the third state to have a place to put bitcoin, following New Hampshire and Arizona.
- Texas is by far the largest state for bitcoin mining.
Context: Senate Bill 21 would create a cryptocurrency investment fund outside the state treasury overseen by the Texas comptroller.
- A five-member advisory committee, including the comptroller, would set investment policies, and the comptroller would be required to publish a financial status report every two years.
The latest: The Texas House passed SB 21 last week, sending the bill back to the Senate, which has already approved it, with minor changes.
What they're saying: "Already the home of crypto mining, this legislative session Texas should become the crypto capital. Gov. Abbott looks forward to reviewing this proposal," Andrew Mahaleris, the governor's press secretary, told Axios in a statement.
Between the lines: The reserve is meant to diversify the state's investments with bitcoin.
- It could be "a hedge against inflation," according to the bill's sponsor, Republican Sen. Charles Schwertner of Georgetown.
3. 🌶️ Settling with Chili's
Chili's and the Beastie Boys are reportedly no longer beefing after settling lawsuits that accused the Dallas-based restaurant chain of using a song in a marketing campaign without permission.
The big picture: Chili's has tried to build a strong social media presence to stay relevant and is booming at a time when many other major restaurant and fast food chains are struggling.
Driving the news: Chili's parent company Brinker International and Universal Music Group filed settlement notices in federal courts in Dallas and Manhattan, New York, last week, Reuters reports.
- The settlement terms were not disclosed.
Friction point: The music group alleged in court documents that a Chili's video included portions of the Beastie Boys' 1994 song "Sabotage" and "evoked" the group by including three characters wearing wigs, fake mustaches and sunglasses.
- The complaint said Beastie Boys founding member Adam Yauch, who died in 2012, forbade the licensing of intellectual property to advertise third-party products, per Reuters.

5. 🌮 One taco to go: Taco Heads
Enjoy a nice day on a covered patio with lush greenery and filling, fresh tacos.
- Thanks to Axios Dallas reader Brian C. for recommending Cowtown's own Taco Heads.
What to expect: Though a small number of indoor seats are available, sit outside on the breezy patio with a view of Dickies Arena.
- Service is quick, so start with two tacos before committing to too many. You can always order more later.
What to order: We opted for two signature tacos — roasted chipotle brisket and charred avocado and roasted corn.
Where: Taco Heads, 1812 Montgomery St., in Fort Worth
- There's a second location at the Stockyards.
Cost: $5.50 for brisket and $4.25 for veggie.
Six-word review: Enough flavor to forgo side salsas.
