1. U.S. Chamber promotes Jessica Boulanger to lead comms and public affairs
Jessica Boulanger has been promoted to senior vice president, head of communications and public affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Axios is first to report.
Why it matters: Many small businesses are looking to the Chamber for guidance on how to navigate Trump's Washington amid the economic uncertainty brought on by trade policies.
Details: Boulanger joined the Chamber in 2023 from Amazon, where she was head of executive communications.
- She also served nearly at decade at the Business Roundtable, where she oversaw communications, government relations and advocacy.
- Early in her career she held stints within public affairs firms and served as a press secretary on Capitol Hill and for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Zoom in: In this new role, she will report to Chamber CEO Suzanne P. Clark and will oversee the team responsible for external, internal, policy, regulatory, legal, issue advocacy and political communications, reputation management, social media and digital content.
Of note: Courtney Felts was also promoted to senior vice president, head of marketing and messaging strategy.
What to watch: The Chamber has a strategy for tackling the changing media landscape and fragmentation of audiences, Boulanger says.
- "What hasn't changed is the need for a powerful narrative. We are embracing the powerful shift in an organization's ability to reach the right people with the right message, which is far more effective than trying to reach everyone with one," she says.
- "The media landscape isn't broken, it's different. And that difference gives us more ways to connect with our key audiences, lead our supporters, and win."
2. Bonus: Arielle Patrick joins Upland Workshop as managing partner
Arielle Patrick has departed Ariel Investments and will join strategic advisory firm Upland Workshop as managing partner, Axios is first to report.
Why it matters: Patrick will manage the firm's growing New York office and will help expand its financial communications offerings.
Details: Patrick will begin Jan. 5 and will report to Upland Workshop founder Adam Mendelsohn.
- At Ariel she served as chief communications officer beginning in 2020.
- Patrick also previously supported the transaction comms and corporate crises and issues practices at Edelman and Weber Shandwick.
Catch up quick: Upland Workshop, founded in 2020, supports clients like LeBron James, RedBird Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Stephen Ross and Maria Sharapova.
What they're saying: "Where Upland, I think, is very different [from other comms firms] is it's not just about comms as central to risk management from a defensive standpoint. It's actually viewed as a proactive growth engine and business strategy," Patrick says.
- "It's about viewing communications as a driver for capital creation and preservation, not just as a protective model."
What to watch: Expect Patrick to tap into that entrepreneurial mindset — particularly when it comes to deal communications, where Patrick says there's "untapped potential."
