π It's Wednesday, and if you still don't have a Halloween costume (like me) we've got some suggestions below.
β Today's weather: Partly sunny, with a high of 68.
Todayβs newsletter is 580 words β a 2-minute read.
1 big thing: π©"Mad Pooper" gets a docf
The Colorado Springs "Mad Pooper" left a mess, a mystery, and apparently, enough material for two hours of television.
Why it matters: TLC is turning the city's 2017 embarrassment into entertainment yet again, revisiting an unanswered question:
- Who was she?
Driving the news: The documentary about the unidentified jogger accused of repeatedly defecating outside Colorado Springs homes pairs news footage with residents' recollections and interviews from former law enforcement officials, TLC announced this week.
- The network promises fresh leads and competing explanations for the behavior β but it stops short of declaring the mystery solved.
Flashback: In September 2017, resident Cathy Budde told KKTV that a runner had been leaving human waste outside her home about once a week for seven weeks.
- Budde said her children first spotted the woman. A confrontation and a sign pleading with her to stop failed, despite nearby public restrooms.
- The absurdity escalated, and Charmin (yes, the popular brand of two-ply toilet paper) offered the woman a year's supply if she turned herself in.
- By November 2017, the action stopped without an arrest.
How to watch: The two-hour special airs Nov. 19 on TLC, with streaming available Nov. 20 on HBO Max and Discovery Plus.
2. π Housing market's split picture
In the Pike's Peak region, the upper hand in the housing market depends on your ZIP code, new Redfin data shows.
Why it matters: When to buy and sell β especially with today's mortgage rates β is a difficult calculation.
State of play: Manitou Springs is tilting toward buyers, with housing inventory growing. The community had 1.6 more months' worth of housing supply than a year earlier.
Yes, but: In Palmer Lake, price cuts are becoming less common, giving sellers the advantage, according to an analysis of ZIP-code-level data from September, the latest numbers available.
- The share of listings with price reductions in ZIP code 80133 fell 25 percentage points from a year earlier.
The big picture: Colorado Springs' market varies by ZIP code, but buyers mostly have the advantage.
3. The Peak: PAC targets District 5
π° Pikes Peak Strong, a new political committee that won't disclose its donors until after the election, has spent more than $31,600 in recent days to help reelect Republican Lauren Nelson to the El Paso County Commission and defeat rival Yolanda Avila, my analysis of campaign finance reports reveals.
π From my inbox: Catalyst Campus announced plans yesterday to add approximately 15,000 square feet to its Colorado Springs aerospace and defense workforce facility to train 700 workers over the next 15 years.
- The state is offering major tax breaks to make the project happen.
π΄Denver-based Brinkerhoff Hospitality is expanding to Colorado Springs with its second location of Sierra, a wood-fired grill concept serving American and Southwestern fare. (Gazette π)
4. π» Our top-trending costumes
We love a good ranking, and Google's new Frightgeist has the area's top trending costumes.
The vibe: In the Springs area, you're most likely to see these trick-or-treaters on Halloween, according to Google searches.
- "Killer Klowns from Outer Space"
- Mike Wazowski from "Monsters, Inc."
- Mandalorian-themed outfits
- Spon"geBob SquarePants"
- Fairies
π« My thought bubble: All Mike Wazowski costumes that come to my door get a full-size candy bar.
π€’ John is at home with the stomach flu (despite getting his vaccine). Be careful out there. Wash your hands. π§Ό
