1 big thing: Abortion pills on campus
College campuses across Colorado, including in the Springs, must provide students access to abortion medication starting next summer.
Why it matters: It's part of a new state law that broadens access to abortion medication for college students.
Driving the news: Gov. Polis signed a bill last week requiring any college or university with a student health center to provide access to abortion medications.
- Schools with pharmacies must stock the medication.
- Campuses without pharmacies can either write prescriptions for off-campus pharmacies or directly dispense the medication.
Zoom in: Because the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) lacks an on-campus pharmacy, the law allows the school to comply by prescribing abortion medication that students fill off campus. That's something the university already allows for, per spokesperson Jenna Press.
- "Any prescriptions needed by our students are filled at off-campus independent pharmacies and their costs would be determined by each student's individual insurance coverage," Press says.
Colorado College is exempt because it doesn't accept Colorado Opportunity Fund dollars, Janelle Taylor, the school's associate vice president for wellness, tells Axios.
- Instead, the student health center refers students to community providers.
Meanwhile, Pikes Peak State College told Axios it is not subject to the law because it does not operate a student health center.
Zoom out: Mifepristone, one of two drugs commonly used in medication abortions, was approved by the FDA in 2000. The American Medical Association calls it "exceedingly safe and effective."
- Medication abortions account for more than 60% of abortions nationwide.
The bottom line: For most Colorado Springs college students, access to abortion medication will likely continue to come through off-campus pharmacies and community providers, rather than campus health centers.
2. The Peak: ๐ Adios beer co.
๐ป Arrevida Beer Co. will close June 28, the brewery announced on social media this week.
- The Latina-owned and operated brewery didn't give a reason for the closure, but plans to go out with a bang. In its final weeks, expect events, extended hours and an "Adios Party" on June 20.
๐ The Defense Department plans to build a $250 million Space Force Operations Facility at Schriever Space Force Base to "support essential missions such as Golden Dome, space-based reconnaissance, and all-domain command and control," per a release from U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank.
- A construction timeline hasn't been publicly shared. (CPR)

๐ The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office responded to a hazmat incident yesterday involving an overturned tanker truck on Highway 50 north of Avondale.
