Axios Chicago Weekender

October 01, 2026
ποΈ Happy Thursday! We've been in Atlanta with our Axios colleagues, but we've been peeking at the Chicago calendar and it looks jam-packed.
Todayβs newsletter is 878 words β a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: Colbert's "Late Show" set is here
Stephen Colbert's late-night desk has a new home in Chicago.
The latest: The Museum of Broadcast Communications debuts its new "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" exhibition tomorrow, featuring the original set and artifacts from the recently ended CBS show.
- The museum is also getting the giant "Late Show" marquee that hung outside New York's Ed Sullivan Theater.
What they're saying: "This iconic marquee is an extraordinary addition to our late-night collection," MBC CEO David Plier said in a release. "We're excited to bring together the set, artifacts and now this iconic piece of television history from Broadway for fans to experience."
State of play: The museum will feature Colbert's desk, credenza, set pieces, guest chairs and more scenery from the show.
Zoom in: The Colbert artifacts will fit right in with the museum's current "Evolution of Late-Night Television" exhibition, where they'll become a permanent addition.
- Visitors can already take photos sitting behind Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" desk.
Zoom out: While the show was filmed in New York City, Colbert has deep ties to Chicago. He cut his comedic teeth at Second City in the early 1990s alongside Steve Carell and Amy Sedaris in mainstage revues including "Take Me Out to the Balkans" and "Are You Now, Or Have You Ever Been Mellow?"
- He currently serves on the famed comedy theater's board of directors.
If you go: The new exhibition opens tomorrow at 10am. Admission to the West Loop Museum (440 W Randolph St.) is $24 for adults.
2. Things to do: Apple Fest, Ministry and more
We have a variety of events to help you plan your weekend β opportunities to laugh, move and snack on some apples!
Carrie's picks:
π I may be the only Chicagoan who has never taken an improv class, but that can all change this weekend! Second City is offering a 90-minute improv workshop at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk's hidden speakeasy, plus cocktails and small bites. | Ma Streeter (Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk) | $59 | Saturday, 7pm
πΊπ» Dancing is all about finding the right groove, spot and crew. Moving to '80s New Wave is the speed I'm looking for these days. DJ Jeff Moyer spins Depeche Mode, New Order, Joy Division, and more. | Beat Kitchen | $13 | Saturday, 9pm
β½ Yes, at least one Chicago baseball team is still in it, and football has arrived, but let's not forget about our other stars β The Chicago Stars! The NWSL team hosts Denver Summit FC at Martin Stadium in Evanston. | $18+ | Sunday, 3pm
Justin's picks:
π It may not be suburban apple picking, but I'm going to enjoy the fall harvest at the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest. Expect fresh apples, cider, seasonal beers, apple-inspired eats and live music at one of Chicago's best autumn street festivals. | Lincoln Ave. from Lawrence to Sunnyside | $5 suggested donation | Friday, 3-7pm, Saturday and Sunday, 9am-6pm
π€ I'm really into 1990s Chicago music right now, and that includes the legendary band Ministry. They're Chicago industrial-metal royalty. I saw them at Lollapalooza at Alpine Valley back in 1992 and was hooked. | Salt Shed Fairgrounds | Ticket prices vary | Saturday, doors open at 5pm
π The World Music Festival comes to a close this weekend. I've always had a great time at this festival because beyond the global music, it's a wonderful reminder that no matter where we're from, we're connected. Check out the Global Peace Party. | Humboldt Park Boathouse | Free | Sunday, noon-5pm
