Axios Chicago Weekender

May 14, 2026
π¨ Happy Weekend! Have you already made plans, or are you one of those people who go where the wind blows you?
- Here are some events in case you want to change it up or need some ideas.
Today's newsletter is 710 words β a 2.5-minute read.
1 big thing: Bluebird brings stars back to Chicago
Chicago has exported plenty to the rest of the country β deep-dish pizza, MalΓΆrt and maybe most importantly, improv.
The latest: Bluebird Improv is presenting a rare homecoming of Chicago improv veterans to the Studebaker Theater in the Fine Arts Building this Saturday.
- On Saturday, former Chicagoans Matt Walsh, Stephnie Weir, Joe Canale, Marc Evan Jackson and Brad Morris will take the stage.
How it works: Instead of taking audience suggestions, the cast starts a short conversation with the audience and creates a show full of scenes and characters based on it.

What they're saying: "Most of us came up in Chicago," Morris tells Axios. "Being able to play with heroes, old friends and make new ones is very special. I think audiences can feel it."
Zoom in: The ensemble, which also features Tim Meadows, Rachel Dratch and Edi Patterson, has toured Denver, Portland, Boston and Milwaukee over the last few months.
Between the lines: It's rare for Chicago improvisers β especially those who move on to Hollywood β to reunite for long-form shows.
- Most homecoming appearances are limited to festival sets or late-night drop-ins at The Second City, iO or Annoyance Theatre.
If you go: The show is Saturday at 7:30pm at the Studebaker Theater.
- Tickets start at $50.

- By the numbers: The Prime Video trailer has over eight million views on YouTube β more than twice as many as HBO Max's trailer for the hit ice hockey romance "Heated Rivalry."
"Marty, Life Is Short" β available now on Netflix.
- Lawrence Kasdan directs the film about beloved comedian Martin Short, who projects joy even amid family tragedy.
- Zoom in: Famous friends interviewed for the documentary include Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, John Mulaney and the late Catherine O'Hara.

π Carrie's thought bubble: Is there anyone more charming than Marty Short? Remember that writer who called him unfunny, and people jumped down the writer's throat? Rightfully so. I'll be watching.
ππ½ββοΈ Carrie is checking out the Lifetime Half Marathon this Sunday. Go runners!
