1 big thing: 🏨 Charlotte wants to up its hotel game

Charlotte tourism officials continue to push for more hotel rooms in the city center as a way to land bigger events.
- A recent decision by the City Council opens the door for the development of a hotel at the newly renovated Charlotte Convention Center.
Driving the news: Last month, the City Council approved a plan for a land swap with a private developer to preserve land adjacent to the convention center for future development. Proponents say this is a key step toward a signature convention center hotel.
- As part of the deal, the city will give 1.9 acres of its property at 501 S. Caldwell St. to Berlin-based Millennium Venture Capital in exchange for 0.7 acres at 401 S. College St., per CBJ.
Why it matters: Charlotte aspires to be a world-class city that hosts events that draw thousands of out-of-town visitors to patronize local businesses.
But to be more competitive in landing large-scale events, Charlotte needs more hotel rooms, hospitality leaders say.
- Think huge business conventions where attendees can easily walk to the convention center from nearby hotels.
Zoom out: Charlotte has fewer hotel rooms in its city center (6,404) than its competitors, according to a presentation Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority prepared ahead of a Nov. 28 City Council vote.
Here's how the hotel offerings in competitors' city centers compare:
- Austin: 13,629
- Baltimore: 8,766
- Indianapolis: 8,487
- Louisville: 9,408
- Nashville: 20,108
- Tampa: 14,104

Financing the transition to net zero
The transformation to a net-zero emissions economy may be ambitious, but it is not impossible. By 2030, global investments in renewable energies must triple to $4 trillion per year.

3. 🧁 Uptown Amelie's will reopen — eventually

The reopening of the Amelie's cafe in Uptown is "imminent."
Flashback: In November 2020, Amelie's closed its location on South College citing challenges stemming from the pandemic, including remote work and COVID restrictions.
- This was the largest Amelie's and had been in business for five years.
- Last spring, Amelie's CEO Frank Reed told CBJ the business would reopen this year. The company has yet to decide on a date.
- "Uptown reopening is imminent," spokesperson Tyler Powell told Axios in an email.
Yes, but: Amelie's had an otherwise eventful year, opening its new flagship bakery in NoDa last spring.
🩰 I spent a good chunk of my childhood in Indiana in ballet, dancing with my friends in our annual production of "The Nutcracker." I still get butterflies when I hear the first few notes of that Tchaikovsky overture.
- In case you haven't seen it, Charlotte Ballet's Nutcracker is magical. It's going on now through Dec. 23, and you can find tickets here.
