1 big thing: Massive brewpub and Airbnb coming to Dilworth

A 29,000-square-foot brewpub and a seven-room Airbnb will open in Dilworth by late 2022, Saucy Brew Works' CEO and cofounder Brent Zimmerman tells me.
The big picture: The Cleveland-based brewery and pizza restaurant plans to open its fifth location, and first East Coast location, here in Charlotte at 501 E. Morehead Street across from the Dowd YMCA and Capishe.
- Once complete, the property will be Charlotte’s largest brewery — larger than both Brewers at 4001 Yancey (28,000 square feet) and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (25,000 square feet).
What to expect: The two-story brewpub will have a nearly 10,000-square-foot rooftop deck.
- Its menu will include 20+ beers on tap, plus coffee and Saucy's popular New Haven-style pizzas.
My thought bubble: This is huge — figuratively and literally. Saucy's expansion cements Charlotte as a beer destination, with not only a giant 29,000-square-foot facility, but a B&B to bat.

2. Get smart about buying a house
Photo: Bri Crane/Axios
I closed on my first house one year ago this week, and boy, have things changed since then:
- Home values skyrocketed from a median of $265K in May 2020 to $315K now.
- Buyers are offering tens of thousands above asking and still getting outbid (largely from all-cash offers).
- Properties vanish from the market at lightning speed, as fast as a few hours.
Why it matters: With elevated home values and bidding wars becoming the norm, some buyers have been priced out for the time being, but Axios' Bri Crane is here to help.
Bri gets asked real estate questions all the time, especially with the market as it is. So she took those questions to local pros and built out the definitive guide to buying a home in Charlotte — from the true cost to a step-by-step list once you find the *one*.
- 🚨 Next week, she'll host a members-only virtual event breaking down the real estate market even further. Become a member here to get on the invite list.

3. Man stable after CMPD shooting

A CMPD officer returned fire at a man near an interstate motel in north Charlotte yesterday. The man was in stable condition, CMPD said.
What’s happening: Chief Johnny Jennings said the incident started when they identified the man as matching the description of a suspect in a recent robbery at another motel a few miles away, Axios’ Michael Graff reports.
- Jennings said the man fled and fired a shot at an officer, who returned fire.
- The State Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation into the shooting, not CMPD.
- Surveillance cameras were in the area, Jennings said, and investigators will check them for evidence.
4. If you have a Lab named Max ...

... congrats, you might be basic.
What's happening: Judging by data provided by Animal Care & Control, Charlotte could use some creativity in naming pets: Max, Buddy and Princess all rank in the top ten.
- The No. 1 dog breed here, the Labrador retriever, is also the No. 1 in the U.S. Other popular breeds include pit bulls, boxers and miniature poodles.
The big picture: During the pandemic pet adoptions have skyrocketed, making already-dog-obsessed Charlotte even more so, Axios' Paige Hopkins writes.
- Charlotte ranks fourth on a recent list of the top emerging dog-friendly cities by Rover and Zillow.

8. 🌳 1 (sorta) good thing
Freedom Park is one of Charlotte's best parks. Photo: Ted Williams/Axios
Charlotte improved ever-so-slightly in an annual ranking of park systems nationwide, but we still have a long way to go, Axios' Katie Peralta Soloff writes.
- The region moved to #91 out of the 100 largest U.S. cities, up from 95 last year, according to the Trust for Public Land ParkScore index.
By the numbers:
- 39% of area residents live within a ten-minute walk of a park. That's worse than the national average of 55%.
- 6% of Mecklenburg County's land is used for parks and recreation, below the national median of 15%.
- 334: The number of parks in Mecklenburg County.
Zoom out: The improved ranking comes as the county, which runs the parks, increased its spending on park systems, as WFAE reported.
- The county now spends $70 per person on parks, up from $56 last year.
